6. Mykines

Day 6.

On 13 August 2013, we headed out to Mykines, the westernmost island in the Faroe archipelago. Mykines is also home of one of the largest aggregations of puffins that I have ever seen. Although puffins used to be hunted (with enormous nets by people balancing at the edge of sea cliffs), and are still sometimes hunted this way, the puffins of Mykines are so numerous that you literally walk among them.

We departed to Mykines, from Sørvágur in the Island of Vagar. The boat ride there offered some amazing views.

Once on the Islands. It was puffin paradise. After leaving the village behind, and walking towards to lighthouse on the far end on the west, we began seeing lots of puffins. So many of them; swarming the grassy slopes and diving in the sea. Flapping around, and landing clumsily with pirouettes. All they swimming skills are opposed by graceless, but extremely cute flight performances. These are little flying penguins, with colourful beaks of course! The puffins in their underground nests would call with their deep voices that resemble more a cow mooing than a bird.

After a brilliant day on Mykines, we took the boat back toSørvágur. Here we were able to sample monkeyflowers again. All but one plant were of the copper-coloured morph. We didn’t take pictures in the field, and could only photograph the plants back in our base camp. It probably was raining heavily.
