3. North to Viðareiði

Day 3.

On 10 August 2013, we set out to sample along a transect from Tórshavn to the northernmost island we could reach by car. The impressive underwater tunnels meant that we could aim for Viðoy, at the very northern end of the Faroes.

Our first stop was just outside of Tórshavn, along a rocky stream. Here we found both the copper- and spotted-morphs in abundance.

Búnaðarstovan

Our next stop was near Búnaðarstovan in Streymoy where we only saw the spotted morph.

Gøtugjógv

Next stop was a Mimulus population in Gøtugjógv in the East of Eysturoy in Gøtuvík Bay. Although the actual sampling location was closer to the NE end of Norðragøta [map]. Both copper and spotted morphs were found here.

Viðareiði

In the Island of Viðoy, we reached the town of Viðareiði, which is the northernmost town in the Faroes.

Here we found a few scattered patches of monkeyflowers, and a much larger patch in a stream to the East of Viðareiði, at the top of a small bay. The stream emptied its waters into a rocky beach, and then the sea. Some patches were very large and could be quite old. Plants had been grazed. We only saw the spotted morph here.
